Stevie was saved from living in a backyard in South Carolina where he was left chained for eight years. Along with another dog named Wonder, he was taken care of by the Lancaster County SPCA, who works alongside other animal rescue organizations like Diamonds in the Ruff from New York. After hearing about Stevie’s story, Diamonds in the Ruff knew they had to bring him into their own rescue community.
Upon Stevie’s arrival at Diamonds in the Rough, it was evident that he was facing numerous challenges. Apart from being visually impaired, Stevie was infested with fleas and worms, and his fur was falling out. After a thorough examination, the vets discovered an old corn cob lodged in his intestines, which required surgical intervention to remove. Moreover, Stevie’s foster family had to exercise patience as he acclimatized to being in a loving home.
Erin Boyd, Stevie’s foster mom, recounted how he growled and barked intermittently during their journey home, but they soon realized he was only trying to defend himself. Upon arriving at their abode, Stevie refused to leave their box, and they were cautious, considering his condition and the fact that they were yet to know him well.
As Stevie’s physical and mental health improved, he slowly started to open up and become more outgoing. His transformation from a timid dog to a lovable mush was heartwarming for his foster family. They were delighted to witness his many “firsts,” including the thrill of sleeping in his very own bed for the first time.
Knowing that Stevie probably had never had a comfortable bed before, his foster family made sure to provide him with one. As soon as he felt the softness beneath his paws, he couldn’t contain his excitement and began jumping up and down with joy.
Whenever Stevie comes across a dog bed, he can’t contain his excitement and performs a little leaping dance. He’s so happy to have something that’s meant for his comfort and often shows it off to anyone around. As Boyd puts it, Stevie jumps, plays with a toy for a bit, and then falls asleep in blissful comfort.
Wow, Stevie has really adapted to his foster home and it’s incredible to see how well he’s doing despite being blind. Boyd was amazed by his intelligence and how quickly he figured out how to get around the house. He has full access to the backyard, the garage, and even the three stairs leading up to the house. Stevie is no stranger to rewards and knows to wait in the kitchen for his treat before jumping onto Boyd’s bed using the small circular ottoman. Not only does he love cuddling and going for walks, but he also enjoys chewing on squeaky toys and giving kisses, which just shows how affectionate he is.
Stevie is searching for a new family to call his own and hopes to find someone who appreciates his unique personality. He requires a pet-free home with someone who can provide him with constant care and attention, something he was lacking during his first eight years of life. Boyd suggests that the perfect match for Stevie would be someone who enjoys spending time with him on the couch, taking him for walks, and showering him with love. Despite all the hardships he has faced, Stevie remains optimistic and content with his comfortable dog beds and the many people who adore him.
