Introducing Paws, the adorable polydactyl feline with a unique feature of having 28 toes, three extra on her front paws and one extra on each hind paw. Her unusual trait made her eligible for the Guinness World Records title for the cat with the most number of toes. When her owners shared pictures of her online, she quickly became famous among cat lovers worldwide. She’s definitely a special kitty worth admiring!
Instead of the usual 20 toes, Paws was born with a remarkable 28 toes! This is due to a condition called polydactyly, where extra digits are present from birth. Paws has three extra toes on both front paws and one extra toe on each of the back paws. His owner, Jeanne Martin from Northfield, finds Paws’ unique trait to be quite useful and adorable. While it does not pose any medical concerns, it definitely adds to his charm and cuteness quotient.
Martin commented that Paws’ front paws resemble a catcher’s mitt due to the extra digits that assist her in gripping narrow surfaces. Paws was rescued by Walter Nachtigall, who is the partner of Jeanne’s daughter, from his maple syrup farm in Cokato. Martin makes it a point to remind the vet to trim all 28 claws when taking Paws for a claw trimming session.
Extra fees are not imposed on her. A popular term for polydactyl cats is “Hemingway cats,” named after the renowned American author who had one as a pet in his Key West residence. Sailors from the past frequently chose polydactyl cats, thinking they brought good fortune.
